Last week at the ROH

greenroom

Following funding cuts announced earlier this year, greenroom, Manchester’s only dedicated new performance venue for nearly quarter of a century, is closing down. I have been performing and creating work at this very interesting and friendly venue, and am very sad to hear about the news. Their extraordinary legacy is currently being documented on their online archive

New audiences at Laban Theatre

Laban Theatre has yielded a plan to offer complementary tickets for local residents to see the premier of TRAFFIC on the 17th March. The aim was to increase the awareness of Laban Theatre within the local community. This video contains the views and opinions of some of those who came to that performance.

Premiere at Laban Theatre and first review

A few days after our premier at Laban Theatre I found our first review here. Thank you everyone for coming to see the performances and we are really looking forwards now to our next shows!

We are in our final rehearsal stages and I have started to talk to Jackie Shemesh about ideas for the lighting design.

About this blog

TRAFFIC has been created in collaboration with accordionist Camilla Barratt-Due, dancers Keir Patrick and Lise Manavit and lighting designer Jackie Shemesh.

TRAFFIC takes its inspiration from the piano piece entitled Abundant Numbers by composer Tom Johnson renown for his minimal music based on mathematical themes. The performers interpret the composition through their own movement and sound, using three accordions, chairs and a piece of glass played by hands. They explore the logical structure as a framework to share their materials and to negotiate and navigate their pathways and rhythms. The result is a myriad of fragmented human expressions leading to a sonic and visual chaos that falls back together into surprising new combinations.

TRAFFIC is commissioned by Laban Theatre and the The Garrick Charitable Trust with support from the Arts Council England and the Firkin Crane in Cork. After its premier at Laban Theatre it toured to the Clore Studio/ Royal Opera House, Deda, Axis Arts and to Yogahome as part of Big Dance London 2012.

Workshops and work-in-progress sharing took place at TrinityLaban for the MA composition and MA choreography students. I have also created two short ensemble works with dance students including Counting Piece with Playgrounds, the graduates' dance company at Northampton University, and In Circles with students on the BA (Hons) Dance in the Community course at University Campus Suffolk.
